ADAPT, formerly The Spastics Society of India, was founded by Dr. Mithu Alur in 1972 with three special needs children. Over three decades it has grown to become one of the foremost non-profit organizations in the country, providing services for more than 3000 children and 10,000 families. Services include assessment, infant stimulation, therapy, counseling, inclusive education, skills training and job placement, continuum of support services and home management programmes for children and young adults with disability.
With the opening of a National Resource Centre for Inclusion (NRCI) in Bandra in 1992, promoting inclusive education became the main aim of the organization. Non disabled children were admitted into the pre-school section, in order to make it an inclusive center where able and disabled children studied together.
ADAPT’S Community Services are spread through various slums in the city of Mumbai.
Pre-school nurseries have been set up in the poorest areas of Mumbai. All children in the area of the nurseries can avail of the educational, therapy, and nutritional services provided.
ADAPT's School of Post Graduate Studies offers courses in the areas of education, disability, inclusion and human rights. With the evolution in policy away from segregation in special schools to inclusion in mainstream schools, all ADAPT courses were reviewed, to ensure that the philosophy of inclusion became an integral part of the revised curriculum. Key principles of inclusive education such as ecologically appropriate curriculum, differentiated curriculum, multiple ability teaching, learning styles, community involvement, cooperative and collaborative learning are now a part of all courses offered at ADAPT’s School of Post Graduate Studies.
National Job Development Centre (NJDC). “Disabled people who are better educated and economically more active will generate higher growth which everyone will share”

The National Job Development Centre (NJDC), Chembur was established in the year 1989 to promote the research, assessment, training, work experience, socialization and placement of youth with multiple disabilities.
